Aihe: CLE 116 Kirjoittaja RJL Pvm 25.03.09 - 08:15:16 Ennakkotietojen perusteella CLE 116 pitää sisällään kuuntelua mahdollisimman yksinkertaisilla laitteilla. Reijo, OH3AVA |

Aihe: Re: CLE116 Kirjoittaja RKA Pvm 31.03.09 - 21:06:46 Tässä siis hieman ennakkotietoa kuuntelutapahtumien järjestäjiltä ... CLE116 will be from Good Friday, 10th April at 10 a.m. to Easter Monday, 13th April at 2 p.m. (your local times). ... It will not exclude users of normal receivers, who will probably be surprised to find that listening without a narrow filter does have some unexpected advantages. After that, the provisional dates for future listening events are: CLE117 May 22 - May 25 CLE118 June 19 - June 22 CLE119 July 24 - July 27 CLE120 August 21 - August 24 Good listening Brian -RKA |

Aihe: Re: CLE 116 Kirjoittaja OH5YW Pvm 04.04.09 - 07:01:15 Hi all Our special Easter CLE will soon be here. ## If you feel that this one is 'not for you', do please have a look ## at the end of this email where I attempt to change your mind! Days: Friday 10 April to Monday 13 April Times: 10 a.m.(Friday) - 2 p.m.(Monday), your LOCAL time Frequencies: Centred on 360 kHz (see below) NDBs: Not more than 100, all 'Normal' ones or UNIDs We are asked to listen with NON-SELECTIVE receivers - i.e. with a WIDE filter or NO filter. If possible, your 'barn door' should be open wide enough for you to hear the NDBs on at least three adjacent frequencies all at the same time (e.g. NDBs on 349 kHz and on 351 kHz with the receiver set to 350 kHz). Listening to one NDB and ignoring several others of different pitch, can be quite a challenge - but a satisfying one when you find how quickly it becomes easier to do. To take part, you could listen with: 1. Ideally, a simple home-made receiver, such as those used by Mark, Finbar and others. 2. OR - An 'antique' receiver - e.g. valve-based, such as the R1155. 3. OR - A normal receiver but with NO filtering, or a WIDE FILTER, say not less than 2 kHz (and no use of an audio filter). You choose how wide a range of frequencies you will listen in, CENTRED ON 360 kHz. E.g. you could choose 350-370 kHz or 330-390 kHz or 260-460 kHz, etc. (That allows each of us to choose a +/- range with enough NDBs to match our equipment's capability, and it will also allow us to compare our results, at least around 360 kHz). Logs should show NOT MORE THAN 100 NDBs logged (if more than 100, the harvester will 'drop' the loggings furthest from 360kHz!) I will summarise everyone's equipment on the first page of the combined results, and I may highlight the results from the simpler homebrew sets, so please tell us: The RECEIVER/AERIAL you used (If homebrew, quote the total number of active devices, the transistor/valve types, whether regen., etc.) The FILTER(S) used, if any. All the usual procedures for making logs apply: Send your CLE log to the List, if possible as a plain text email and not in an attachment, with CLE116 at the start of its title. Please show on EVERY LINE of your log: # The full date (or Day No.) and UTC (the day changes at 00:00 UTC). # kHz - the beacon's nominal published frequency, if you know it. # The Call Ident. Show those main items FIRST on each line, before other optional details such as Offsets, Location, Distance, Cycle times, etc. If you send incomplete logs to the List during the event, please also send your 'Final', complete one. Whether or not you are a first time CLE-er, please make your log interesting to everyone by showing your own location. If you want to, you could send us two separate logs made from different sites - maybe from home and from a portable location (the 100 limit would apply separately to each). The extra two hours on the first and last day might help with 'midday' listening out of doors. I will send the usual 'Any More Logs?' email at about 18:00 UTC on Tuesday 14th April so that you can check that your log has been found OK. Do make sure that your log has arrived on the List at the very latest by 08:00 UTC on Wednesday 15th. I hope to complete the combined results on that day. Listening with 'back to basics' equipment often gives very satisfying and unexpected results and it can also show us how we might be able to improve our listening when operating more normally. However you choose to take part, I hope you will find it very worthwhile. Good listening Brian |

Aihe: Re: CLE 116 Kirjoittaja OH5YW Pvm 04.04.09 - 07:05:46 Greetings, Now we have the final details of the upcoming CLE 116, Barn Door event, attached is a new picture of my 1 AD, ie One Active Device receiver, and which I will use during the CLE. It uses just one active component, a dual gate Mosfet type BF960, the power supply is an ordinary PP3 9v battery. The transformer a normal mains supply ( European) 0 - 220 volt primary and 0 - 20 volt secondary type. A Hi-Z pair of headphones is essential, however Steve Ratzlaff has reported using 600 ohm headphones made by JRC, type ST-3 and available from Universal Radio in Ohio. I have already ordered a pair. The Hi-Z phones I use at present are World War 2 vintage and tend to be a little sore, physically, on the outside of one's ears, over a protracted listening period. They are DLR5's. No effort has been made to tidy up this set, rather it is a test bed for experiments. Note that a simple single turn link can be used on the ferrite rod to feed a frequency counter and although the "offset" is not strictly accurate, it nevertheless gives one a very good idea where one is on the NDB band. Some figures now, for those having a go building Mike Tuggles receiver and on whose circuit my receiver is based. Thanks to Mike for sharing this circuit with us. Using a main tuning capacitor of 0 - 450 pf. 1. Main tuning coil measured 627 uH on the ferrite rod. 2. Feedback coil measured 266 uH on ferrite rod, should be smaller in value, but worked for me. 3. Antenna coupling coil 4 turns of 20 SWG enamelled copper wire. 4. Frequency counter link 1 turn ( Note: The feedback coil of 266 uH, used about 60 turns of Litz wire. This will give you an idea of the number of turns needed. Work up the value for the Main tuning coil ) No need to use enamelled copper wire, it just formed easy, use what you have. I used Litz wire for the Main and Feedback windings. Use what you have, scramble wind to fit, just to get going. Later you can use Litz for best efficiency, but with a week to go to the Barn Door CLE 116 it is best now to just build, and improve later on, when you have the time. If a One Active Device is not realisable without Hi-Z phones, use the secondary winding of that mains transformer to feed a signal to a basic LM386 audio amplifier, so you can run your ordinary 8 ohm speaker. Or, instead of that speaker, plug in your 8 ohm headset , adjusting the volume to suit. Best of luck in this interesting, upcoming CLE 116.
